Cats often feel love quite strongly for their owners and other companions. They're just sometimes a little more subtle about it than dogs. Have you ever asked yourself, "What do cats think about their owners? From slow blinks to purrs, kneading, and following you from room to room, cats show love in many unique and wonderful ways.
Cats don't just think of their owners as food machines. They actually see us as parents. A study revealed that cats have the same attachment to their owners that babies show to their parents. Kittens in the study acted distressed when their caregivers left and happy and secure when they returned. They still acted this way one year later. The responses were similar to how human children react to their parents.
So now that you know cats truly do feel love, how do they show it to us? Humans are expressive, employing body language, hand gestures, facial expressions, words, and tone to show how we feel. Cats have their own way of communicating that is very different from ours. If you understand this cat "language," you can see their love displayed in many ways. But just like people, each cat is unique.
Some show these signs frequently, and others are more independent, only showing the signs from time to time. The slow blink is a cat's classic language of love.
A good translation of the slow blink is, "I am very happy, content, and peaceful right now. It's a great way to tell your cat you love her too. Dog-shaming, by comparison, is a one-note joke playing on dopey dog naughtiness. Cats have a much richer range of ambitions and emotions for LOLCat-maker to exploit. Cats form strong attachment to their owners. There are many known cases where the owner had to leave, or died, and the cat showed signs of distress. They go into hiding. They even refuse to eat. Some perfectly healthy cats have had such a strong attachment that they simply died after the loss of their owner, the only cause seeming to be a broken heart.
Again, cats have boundaries and they are not terribly forgiving. But they are loyal, as shown by the long journeys many have taken to return home. But selfless? Concern for others? Cats have been known to risk their lives for their owners. One kitty we know of fought off a poisonous snake and took the bite that was meant for her owner. Your adult cat uses these vocalizations specifically to interact with people.
Just like us, cats don't "talk" to people they dislike, so even when your cat pesters you with lots of meows, remember that they are interacting with you out of love. Cats spend an enormous amount of time self-grooming and friendly cats also groom each other. Cats that groom their favorite people , by licking their skin or hair or even nibbling or sucking on their clothing, indicate great affection.
